Bryn Athyn College is a private Christian liberal arts college in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. The school is found 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia. The main campus is found in a National Historic Landmark District. Bryn Athyn College was established under the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1877. The school was known as the Academy of the New Church and it was built to train ministers, as was most higher learning institutions in those times. Then in 1890, the academy established a new and separate organization, the General Church of the New Jerusalem, a religious organization that taught the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The Academy separated from the church and became a 4-year college in 1914. By 1922 the College was offered Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees. In 1997, the New Church College was renamed as the Bryn Athyn College of the New Church. Soon the school was simply known as Bryn Athyn College.
The College's original campus and surrounding community of Bryn Athyn were designed in by Charles Eliot in 1893. Eliot was member of the renowned firm that also designed the famed Central Park in New York City. The campus is located in the borough of Bryn Athyn, in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
The College offers majors in Biology, Education, English, History, Religion, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Interdisciplinary Studies (ID) program allows students to combine two curricular areas into a single area of study. Among the Interdisciplinary Areas of Study offered by the schoool includes Religion, Art and Art History, Psychology, Biology, Philosophy, Business Management, Mathematics, English and History. Bryn Athyn College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. The school competes in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).
